چکیده

The discovery of supersoft X-ray sources, described as massive white dwarfs burning accreted matter from their (more massive) companions, opens a new channel to type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). According to conventional binary evolutionary theory, if the mass ratio of the donor to the white dwarf exceeds a critical value, the mass transfer becomes unstable, and a common envelope will be formed. However, recent calculations by Hachisu, Kato & Nomoto (1996) suggest a strong wind to stabilize the mass transfer when the mass transfer rate is higher than a certain value. Adopting the strong wind assumption, wehave performed evolutionary calculations ofwhite dwarf binaries, in which mass transfer occurs through Rochelobe overflow, to search for the progenitors of SNe Ia. We find that there are two types of systems that can produce SNe Ia. One is close binaries with ∼ 2 to ∼ 3.5M main-sequence or subgiant companions, and the initial orbital period of several tenth of a day to several days. The other is wide binaries with low-mass (∼ 1M ) red giant companions and long initial orbital period (tens to hundreds of days). The derived birth rate of SNe Ia in the Galaxy is roughly consistent with the observed one.

Thermal Stability of White Dwarfs Accreting Hydrogen-rich Matter and Progenitors of Type Ia Supernovae

We revisit the properties of white dwarfs accreting hydrogen-rich matter by constructing steady-state models, in which hydrogen shell burning consumes hydrogen at the same rate as the white dwarf accretes it. We obtain such steady-state models for various accretion rates and white dwarf masses. We confirm that these steady models are thermally stable only when the accretion rate is higher than ...

Binary Evolution of Type Ia Supernovae

Observations of Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) combined with modeling of dynamics, light curves and spectra continue to point to the difficult conclusion that SN Ia result from degenerate ignition in a carbon/oxygen white dwarf of the Chandrasekhar mass. Such a model accounts well for the “normal” SN Ia and for the observed dispersion exemplified by the light curve amplitude-shape relation. The cri...

An Ultraluminous Supersoft X-ray Source in M81: An Intermediate-Mass Black Hole?

Ultraluminous supersoft X-ray sources (ULSSS) exhibit supersoft spectra with blackbody temperatures of 50-100 eV and bolometric luminosities above 10 erg s, and are possibly intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) of ≥ 103M⊙ or massive white dwarfs that are progenitors of type Ia supernovae. In this letter we report our optical studies of such a source in M81, M81-ULS1, with HST archive observati...

Prediction of Supersoft X-ray Phase during the 2006 Outburst of Rs Ophiuchi

RS Ophiuchi is one of the well-observed recurrent novae and also a candidate progenitor of Type Ia supernovae. Its sixth recorded outburst was discovered on 12 February 2006. Detection of a supersoft X-ray phase will provide a firm confirmation of hydrogen shell-burning on the white dwarf and its turn-on/turn-off dates strongly constrain a mass range of the white dwarf, which clarify whether or...

A New Evolutionary Path to Type Ia Supernovae: Helium-rich Super-soft X-ray Source Channel

We have found a new evolutionary path to Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) which has been overlooked in previous work. In this scenario, a carbon-oxygen white dwarf (C+O WD) is originated, not from an asymptotic giant branch star with a C+O core, but from a red-giant star with a helium core of ∼ 0.8− 2.0M⊙. The helium star, which is formed after the first common envelope evolution, evolves to form a ...
